St. John's Wort Hypericum Perforatum

St. John's Wort, whose Latin name is 'Hypericum perforatum', belongs to the St. John's wort family. Its homeland is Europe, North Africa and West Asia. The plant, which grows naturally in forests, fields and roadsides in Europe, has also adapted to North America and started to grow naturally in the countryside. There are 60 different species in our country. St. John's wort is a perennial herbaceous plant, named after the yellow color of its star-shaped flowers. It is also known as binbirdelik grass because of the small holes on its leaves.

It is also known as Kılıç grass, Mayasıl grass and Koyunkıran. It is used after collecting and drying the flowers and seeds of the plant during the flowering period. It is known for its slightly spicy smell and sharp bitter taste. It was famous in Greek and Roman civilizations as a protector against evil spells. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that the plant walked and moved after it was collected. St. John's wort was hung in bunches at the entrances and doors of houses to protect against evil spirits. In paganistic times, it was the symbol of the 'Sun God' with its dazzling golden flowers. In some cultures, decorating with St. John's wort flowers became a ritual during various celebrations and spring festivals.
